Persistence in School

With our partner teachers, we work to increase equity in education by boosting the skills of entire schools of children, increasing the future opportunities for entire communities. One year after TU programming, TU primary schools increased from 49th percentile to 87th percentile in national rank.

This increase in rank has a profound impact on a student’s trajectory in life as these exams determine if students continue on to access secondary education or not.

Outsized Impact for Girls

Girls in Africa face gendered barriers to success in school and life. TeachUNITED teachers help girls build skills needed to thrive in the classroom and beyond.

Girls at TU Schools in East Africa show more than 4x the growth of peers in early literacy.

TeachUNITED’s impact on graduation rates is significant and lasting for girls. Promotion rates of girls in TU secondary schools in East Africa increased each year after programming.

In the years since TeachUNITED started working in Sarapiquí, they have reached 1,012 educators in 85 schools, who in turn have served 61,796 students.

This case study finds that the TeachUNITED program is effective in delivering impactful teaching methods for quality education within Sarapiquí. As a result, the program has helped to improve student outcomes, boost teacher engagement and motivation, and maintain ongoing school improvement.

Closed Achievement Gaps

TU and the teachers enrolled in our program work to close student achievement gaps. Low-income students are particularly well-served by the TU Program. Proficiency rates for both literacy and math increased greatly compared to peers.

Improved Teacher Retention and Impact

Given the expense and disruption that teacher turnover can have on schools, TU helps establish professional learning communities of committed, effective teachers who help their schools succeed. There is a direct impact on teacher retention, motivation, and sense of efficacy.
