Collective Efficacy: “Know Thy Impact”

What does impact mean in your school? In your classrooms? How do you understand where your students are in their learning and then determine what progress looks like? When John Hattie says, “know thy impact,” he essentially means connecting what you and your teachers do with what your students learn. Focus on the learners and the learning. Focus on the things that can have the most impact on your students.

That’s where collective efficacy comes in.

Collective efficacy is the group belief of teachers and leaders in their ability to positively impact students. The research is clear. John Hattie’s most recent meta-analysis underscores that collective efficacy is the top factor (when implemented with fidelity) that will move the needle on student achievement.

To “know thy impact” through collective efficacy means your teachers see learning from the eyes or perspective of students while assuming a group or collective responsibility for achievement and outcomes.

The blogs below dig into collective efficacy more and tease out some ways to put it into practice within your schools and districts right away.
